Former Star Explains Why Leicester Are in Crisis and With ‘No Clear Direction’

Following back-to-back home defeats, Leicester legend Marc Albrighton opens up on the current turmoil. City has recently sacked Marti Cifuentes, their third manager change in the past 13 months. In addition to this, on the pitch, they haven’t kept a clean sheet in 24 games and are slowly walking into a fight for survival. Albrighton clearly sees it this way too, with the many issues off the pitch severely affecting performances. Whether it’s supporter apathy, a looming points deduction or a lack of communication at the top, it feels like almost every aspect of the club is broken.

Marc Albrighton Discusses The Lack Of Continuity During ‘Difficult Times’

What Did Marc Albrighton Say?

When talking to BBC 5 Live Sport following the Charlton game, Marc Albrighton gave his assessment on the current state of affairs. He said: ” There’s just no clear direction as to where Leicester are going at the minute.” This was when discussing Cifuentes’ recent sacking, with Albrighton saying he doesn’t think the Spaniard is a bad manager, and it’s just poor timing. In the summer, just three outfield players were brought in, all of whom were loan signings on deadline day, which further highlights the lack of backing.

Outside of this, Albrighton also added his thoughts on the lack of continuity between the key figures at the top. In his recent interviews, Khun Top outlined the need to bring in a new CEO, commercial director and sporting director in a major overhaul. The issue with this is whether or not these high-profile figures can be on the same wavelength. Both Top and Jon Rudkin have been under major scrutiny as of late for their standpoints and a lack of change. Therefore, would adding a more progressive figure work, as everything seems so disjointed?

CEO Susan Whelan already departed this season, and with high-profile figures like Jamie Vardy also criticising those in the boardroom, it’s tough to see a world where these appointments make a major difference. Albrighton certainly agrees with this as he stated: “They all need to agree on where they want the club to go, because at the minute everybody at the football club is looking in different directions”

Is This a Fair Assessment of Leicester?

Given the recent performances and dismal state of the club on and off the pitch, it’s hard to disagree with the former winger. The cohesion that once delivered a Premier League title seems so distant. A club that was like a family for so many players has lost the plot, and unless huge ramifications come, then nothing will change. This ongoing decline has been present for the last three to four years, and still hasn’t been addressed. Whether it’s not complying with PSR or not seeing where they went wrong in 2022/23, it seems like the current figureheads are out of their depth.

In terms of this season, the issues are lingering. A lack of investment in players has left the manager severely handicapped. Moreover, a points deduction could still come, which would likely put the Foxes in a relegation battle, as they failed to keep within the rules for the 23/24 season. Despite all of this, Top remains disillusioned and still thinks the play-offs are on the cards for next season if it doesn’t happen this time around. The lack of addressing these prominent problems is seriously damaging, especially when these powerful figures don’t take accountability. Overall, Albrighton very much hit the nail on the head. As he said, it’s “difficult times’, and for a club that was in Europe back in 2016,  a decade later, they could be sleepwalking into League One.
