Seven Goal Flurry Puts Curacao On Brink of First World Cup Appearance

CONCACAF completed the fifth matchday of its six-game main phase for 2026 World Cup qualifying, and the tension couldn’t be higher. Every group remains alive. Every match matters. With only one direct qualification spot available per group—and multiple teams still in striking distance—the path to the World Cup is entering its most chaotic stretch. Here’s how Thursday’s drama unfolded, and what to expect in next week’s decisive showdowns.

Curacao To Face Jamaica For World Cup Berth

Curacao understood that goal difference might decide Group B, and they played like a team on a mission against already-eliminated Bermuda. With 27 shots and six different goalscorers, the Dutch Caribbean side opened the scoring from the spot in the sixth minute and never eased off. Roshon van Eijma added the final goal in stoppage time to cap a ruthless, statement performance. Curacao remain unbeaten in the group.

They now lead Jamaica by a single point—11 to 10—and everything comes down to their clash in Kingston. Curacao won the reverse fixture 2–0, meaning Jamaica must win at home to surpass them and reach their first World Cup since 1998.

Jamaica, meanwhile, left Kingston frustrated after a flat performance against Trinidad and Tobago. Despite T&T being eliminated, they dominated possession, out-shot Jamaica nearly 3-to-1, and stunned the Reggae Boyz with an 85th-minute game tying goal from Kevin Molino, overturning Renaldo Cephas’ earlier opener for Jamaica. The 1-1 result leaves Jamaica on the outside looking in for the World Cup.

Suriname 90 Minutes Away From First World Cup

Suriname—like Curacao, a Dutch-speaking hopeful chasing its first World Cup—delivered another commanding display, crushing El Salvador in Paramaribo to climb atop Group A. They sit level with Panama on nine points but hold the advantage on goal differential.

Panama kept pace with a gritty 3–2 win over Guatemala, eliminating Los Chapines while keeping their own World Cup hopes alive. Cecilio Waterman, a champion in Chile with Coquimbo Unido, scored twice in the first half at age 34, leading by example. Guatemala roared back with goals in the 69th and 72nd minutes, but José Fajardo—who plays his club football in Ecuador—sealed the win with a brilliant strike inside the box.

Resurgent Haiti Tied with Honduras in Group C

Haiti stunned Costa Rica with a decisive finish from AEK Athens forward Frantzdy Pierrot, giving the nation its clearest shot at a first World Cup since 1974. Playing all their qualifiers away from home due to domestic turmoil, Haiti have nevertheless shown remarkable resilience in this tournament. Against a Costa Rica side with a richer roster and World Cup pedigree, Haiti looked the more confident, disciplined team. Keylor Navas’ squad now faces a win or go home situation to qualify.

Honduras, meanwhile, collapsed under pressure in Nicaragua, missing their chance to clinch qualification early. Goals from Bancy Hernández and J.J. Moreno Ciorciari powered Nicaragua to a shock 2–0 win. Honduras now enter their final match as underdogs against Costa Rica—with their supporters visibly fed up as patience runs out.

Despite the setback, Honduras can still reach their first World Cup since 2014. But both they and Costa Rica will meet in a desperate, emotionally charged finale.

Looking Ahead To November 18th

The final matchday promises fireworks across all three groups.

Manager Dick Advocaat stands on the brink of history—Curacao can reach their first-ever World Cup with either a win or draw in Kingston. Should they succeed, they would become the smallest nation ever to qualify. Jamaica, powered largely by MLS and English football pyramid players, must win or face heartbreak.

Suriname need a victory over Guatemala to guarantee qualification, though even a draw will likely be enough thanks to their +3 goal differential. Panama must defeat El Salvador at home—and do so convincingly—to keep their World Cup streak alive.

And in Group C, Costa Rica host Honduras with everything at stake in a match that will test both teams’ belief, resolve, and nerve. Nearby, eliminated Nicaragua face Haiti, who have a golden chance to claim their first ticket to the World Cup in 50 years. If Haiti, Suriname, and Curacao achieve direct qualification, it would be a massive reputational blow to Central American football, even without the U.S.A, Mexico, and Canada in the CONACAF Groups, no Central American nation may join the World Cup party in 2026.

The stage is set. Three groups, one matchday, and a region’s World Cup dreams hanging by a thread.
