Chelsea Set to Lose Squad Depth in Loan Departure of ‘Mini Paul Pogba’

Chelsea continue to misuse talent that might be the answer to their current crisis at the start of 2025. The latest departure could be Carney Chukwuemeka, for whom Borussia Dortmund have made a bid.

Borussia Dortmund Make Official Move for Carney Chukwuemeka

Carney Chukwuemeka Could Go to Dortmund

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Chukwuemeka is subject to interest from Borussia Dortmund. The German club have put in an official bid for the midfielder to move to Germany in a loan move.

Romano added “more clubs are keen” to ask about the availability of the Englishman. According to the BBC, one of the other suitors could be Strasbourg, also under the ownership of Clearlake Capital.

But Borussia Dortmund are in desperate need. The 2023/24 Champions League finalists sit in tenth place in the table and have recently parted ways with their manager and former player Nuri Sahin. Niko Kovač is the new leader but a fresh voice alone will not return the team to the elite European qualification spots.

The Bundesliga has been a breeding ground for Premier League players who crave more minutes as an audition for their ability. Jamie Gittens is running with the torch that Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham passed on in this pipeline of talent. Chukwuemeka could be next on the conveyor belt.

Chelsea Cap Chukwuemeka’s Chances

Chukwuemeka, who had earned the moniker of the “mini Paul Pogba“, stands at 6’2” with balletic ball-controlling qualities. His powerful ball carrying, range of passing, and strong shooting skills caught the attention of Chelsea. He signed for the Blues in the summer of 2022 for a transfer fee of £20 million.

The midfielder scored his first goal for the club in a 3-1 loss to West Ham United at the start of the 2023/24 season. In the second half of the campaign, he made seven appearances as a substitute and would have wanted to fight for his spot as part of the starting eleven. But his plans have gone awry.

Enzo Maresca only has three trusted options in the middle of the park: Roméo Lavia, Moisés Caicedo, and Enzo Fernández. Yet, he has handed no minutes in the Premier League to the 21-year-old, who has only played in the cups for the Italian. Age is on his side but football is an unforgiving industry.

This predicament is another example of the messy squad construction at Chelsea under Todd Boehly. But Borussia Dortmund could give Chukwuemeka the exit he needs for his talent to shine.
