Since there were a number of first-team players returning from injury, coach Vincent Kompany made several changes. First and foremost, he switched the formation back to the team’s standard 4-2-3-1, thus moving away from the earlier 4-2-4 shape.
In terms of personnel, that meant that Davies, Kane, Upamecano and Goretzka took the places of Raphael Guerreiro, Thomas Müller, Eric Dier, and Aleksandar Pavlovic respectively.
Bayern Munich Recent Form and Tactics
In terms of form, the team have had some consistency issues just before the winter break, but the emphatic wins against Leipzig and more recently Salzburg have put an end to that for now. Tactically, the 4-2-3-1 formation is back with Kane being the front man again.
Bayern Munich Injuries to Consider
The new year brings some relatively good news on the injury front. Though Peretz is newly hurt and Musiala is out with an illness, only Sacha Boey, Joao Palhinha, Josip Stanisic, and Hiroki Ito are still left on the injury list. While that still sounds like a lot, most of them will return soon, as many others already have.
Kompany said in the pre-match press conference that with Upamecano out due to a yellow card suspension, the defensive line likely picks itself.
