How England Have Lined-up Recently

Jordan Pickford is the goalkeeper. Kyle Walker is the right-back, whilst Kieran Trippier started in the place of the recovering Luke Shaw against Serbia. Marc Guehi partnered John Stones at centre-back.

Declan Rice is the key to England’s midfield and was partnered by Trent Alexander-Arnold in the opening match. Jude Bellingham was, of course, the number ten.

Phil Foden started on the left-wing with Bukayo Saka on the right. Harry Kane played through the middle.

England’s Recent Form and Tactics

It was a marginally underwhelming performance against Serbia. Importantly England got the three points with a 1-0 victory, though they didn’t look too threatening on the attack.

Foden struggled to get involved in the game; fans were confused when the Manchester City star played the full 90 minutes whilst Cole Palmer stayed on the bench. Similarly, Kane touched the ball just twice in the first half.

England’s strength was in their defence. Serbia were not a threat: their only shot inside the box came after Alexander-Arnold’s poor touch found Andrija Zivkovic.

Guehi was pivotal to this. When Harry Maguire dropped out of the squad, fans were unsurprisingly anxious, but the Crystal Palace centre-back was a sound replacement. His sweeping passes were excellent, but he was also very important defensively.
