Swansea City International Break Update: Lowe’s CONCACAF Drama, Cullen’s Euro Dreams and More

Jamal Lowe And Liam Cullen Amongst Swansea City Players Called Up To International Teams

Fresh off scoring goals in the South Wales Derby victory over rivals Cardiff City, Swansea City forwards Jamal Lowe and Liam Cullen awaited key international matches with their respective nations in March. They are joined by several other club teammates who have been called up to represent their senior or youth international teams this break. Many Swansea academy players have also been called up to represent their youth international teams.

Which Swansea City Players Are In Action This International Break?

Jamal Lowe Misses Out On Silverware With Jamaica

Jamaica manager Heimir Hallgrímsson re-called Lowe to his squad ahead of their 2024 CONCACAF Nations League Finals matches after a period of absence from the national team.

Jamaica qualified for the final stage of the CONCACAF Nations League for the first time in their history, where they faced reigning champions USA in the semi-final at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Swansea forward Lowe was in the Jamaica starting lineup but was substituted in the 65th minute with his team one goal ahead. Unfortunately for Lowe and his teammates, the USA found an equaliser in stoppage time before scoring twice in added time to win the match 3-1 and progress to the final.

The Reggae Boyz will return to the same venue on Sunday to take on Panama in the third-place play-off after they were defeated 3-0 by Mexico.

Lowe reunited with former Swans players Joel Latibeaudiere and Kasey Palmer in the Jamaica squad, alongside many other UK-based players such as Michail Antonio, Bobby Decordova-Reid and Dexter Lembikisa.

Lowe said to the Jamaican media: “It’s been a while since I’ve been involved in a camp so it’s good to be back.”

Liam Cullen Hopes to Lead Wales to Euro 2024

Liam Cullen and Ben Cabango were the Swansea duo to originally be called up by Rob Page to his Wales squad ahead of their crucial Euro 2024 play-offs.

However, after a calf injury that forced him out of the match against Cardiff, Cabango has been withdrawn from the Page’s squad and replaced by QPR defender Morgan Fox.

After making several appearances for Wales’ youth sides, Cullen made his senior debut in a 4-0 friendly victory over Gibraltar last October.

He spoke of his desire for Wales to qualify for Euro 2024 in Germany: “I have yet to experience a qualification for a major tournament.

“It’s something I want to be a part of, and I hope I can help us get there.”

On Thursday, Cullen was an unused substitute in Wales’ 4-1 domination of Finland at the Cardiff City Stadium. He could be handed a chance to play when Poland travel to Cardiff in the play-off final on Tuesday. Poland progressed to the play-off final after dismantling Estonia 5-1 and will be a tough opponent for the Dragons.

Mykola Kuharevich and Nathan Wood-Gordon Make Youth Squads

Ukranian striker Mykola Kuharevich has been called up to his country’s U23 side for an Olympic Games warm-up friendly fixture against Japan on Monday.

Ukraine are in a group with 2008 Olympic gold medalist Argentina, Morocco, and an undecided nation from Asia ahead of the Olympic football programme in Paris, which kicks off in July.

Centre-back Nathan Wood-Gordon has been picked in Lee Carsley’s Young Lions’ squad ahead of their 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification matches against Azerbaijan and Luxembourg. The 21-year-old has made two previous appearances for the team.

Swansea academy players Joel Cotterill and Evan Watts started in Wales U21’s starting lineup in their 2-1 qualifier victory against Lithuania. Ben Lloyd was an unused substitute. Matt Jones’s side has one more match to pay this international window, a friendly against Morocco.
