Chelsea: Pochettino Reveals Major Injury Update on Reece James

Mauricio Pochettino offers Reece James Injury Update

Reece James has stayed sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury in December. After a slow start to his rehab process, the right-back is now closer to making his long-awaited comeback. On Saturday, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed James will return to full training sooner than initially expected.

Pochettino Reveals Reece James Comeback Timeline

How Was Reece James Injured?

James limped off Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat against Everton on December 10 with an apparent pain in his hamstring. Having already suffered two serious hamstring issues in the past year, the defender quickly announced his decision to undergo surgery.

James’ injury was a major squad blow to Chelsea, who had just started their first campaign under Pochettino. However, the Chelsea captain’s absence has provided an opportunity for 20-year-old Malo Gusto to find his place in Chelsea’s starting lineup.

Gusto has already racked up 18 appearances for Chelsea, earning praise for his brilliant displays against Crystal Palace and Manchester City in recent weeks. However, the youngster might face competition for his starting spot before the end of the season.

Reece James Edging Closer to Full Recovery

Speaking before Chelsea’s match against Brentford on Saturday, Pochettino offered a positive update on James’ recovery, saying (via Fabrizio Romano): “I think Reece will be involved before the end of the season.

“This is my hope, but for me, the priority is about him, to help him find his best again to feel solid and strong.

“I cannot say the exact date of when his return is possible.”

Pochettino’s comments confirmed a similar message from James himself. Earlier this week, the defender published a photo of his rehab process in Doha on Instagram, writing: “All these setbacks I took would break you, the comeback is coming.”

James’ imminent return is a major boost for England ahead of the European Championship. However, the Chelsea star will face fierce competition from in-form Kyle Walker to reclaim his starting place under Gareth Southgate.

How Many Matches Has Chelsea’s Right-back Missed Due to Injury?

Hamstring injuries have been a recurring theme in James’ career ever since he made his senior debut in October 2020. The Chelsea star’s current injury is the seventh time he has to stay out of action with a similar issue.

According to Transfermarkt, James has missed a total of 74 games for Chelsea since the start of the 2020-21 season. In an emotional message right after his surgery in December, James commented on the negative reactions to his injury record.

The Chelsea star said on Instagram: “Since this injury, I’ve had a good amount of support but significantly more hate and negativity.

“Believe me, I don’t want to be injured; I’m happiest when I’m playing football.”

James has been limited to only eight appearances for Chelsea this season. As the Blues struggle to escape the Premier League mid-season, James’ return could be a timely boost for them in the final weeks of the campaign.
