‘We Hope No More’: Chelsea Deliver Gutting Injury Update on Ace Forward

Chelsea's Christopher Nkunku fights for the ball with Liverpool's Luis Diaz

Chelsea suffered a dismal loss in the 2023/24 Carabao Cup final after conceding a goal in extra time despite dominating for the majority of the match. After that, the Blues seem to have suffered more bad news in the form of another injury for Christopher Nkunku.

Chelsea Confirm New Injury Blow For Christopher Nkunku

How Long Will Nkunku Be Out For?

Even though the French forward did participate in the Carabao Cup final, it appears that he has suffered a new injury that will keep him out for a few more weeks. Mauricio Pochettino confirmed this to the media and said: “We need to evaluate him (Nkunku) every day. At the moment, he could be maybe three or four weeks out. We hope no more.”

“We found out after [the final that he had suffered an injury]. It’s difficult for him. When he arrived in pre-season, he was flying on the pitch and in training in America. Then he got the knee injury and now it’s nearly eight months later. Even when he was ready to be involved again, he couldn’t be the same as before. That is the risk. We have in our head the potential best Nkunku that everyone knows from the Bundesliga, but he can’t be that player. That is why it is unfair to judge because the situations are completely different.”

Chelsea’s Injury Issues Keep Piling Up

Pochettino has been unfortunate to see his first season in charge of the Blues tarnished with constant injury issues to his side. Nkunku, for one, suffered a bad knee injury in pre-season that forced him to miss the first half of the season. Apart from him, the likes of Reece James, Robert Sanchez and Marc Cucurella are all out with injuries.

Defender Wesley Fofana is another player to get injured in pre-season and has yet to play any games this season.

However, this new blow for Nkunku will feel particularly gutting because he was seemingly starting to get into his groove after recovering from his recent knee injury. There was a lot of expectations from the Frenchman after his successful period at RB Leipzig, for whom he scored 70 goals and provided 56 assists in 172 appearances and also won the 2022/23 Bundesliga Golden Boot award.

He’s only been able to make 10 competitive appearances for Chelsea, scoring two goals and will now need to face another spell on the sidelines in a frustrating campaign.
