Classic Clash: Oxford United 3-0 Wycombe Wanderers 2015/16

Oxford Wycombe

Oxford United will be looking to continue their hunt for promotion when they travel to Wycombe on Saturday.

We go back to the last time the U’s won promotion, which came as a classic clash against the Chairboys.

Classic Clash: Oxford United Secure Promotion Against Wycombe

What a Season for the U’s

Under Michael Appleton, the U’s enjoyed a tremendous 2015/16 season, and a win over Wycombe on the final day would see the club back in the third tier just ten years after suffering relegation into the Conference.

Over the course of the campaign, Oxford had seen off Premier League side Swansea City in the FA Cup third round, hit four past Brentford at Griffin Park in the first round of the League Cup and reached the Football League Trophy final, before ending the campaign with promotion to League One.

Despite a nervy and goalless first half, defender Chey Dunkley smashed home a header shortly after the restart to send the yellow army into raptures.

Chris Maguire converted from the penalty spot after Kemar Roofe was fouled in the box before Oxford-born Callum O’Dowda scored a sensational solo effort with time running out.

The result meant that Oxford had made a return to the third tier for the first time since the 2000/01 season.

Oxford United and Wycombe Meet Again

Oxford United will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to five games when the U’s make the short trip to Wycombe on Saturday.

Des Buckingham has overseen draws against Portsmouth, Reading and Blackpool before a win over Wigan on Tuesday night.

As for Wycombe, they lost at Bolton during the week but that was a first defeat in five in all competitions. The Chairboys are also unbeaten in their last seven matches at Adams Park.

The two teams played out a 2-2 draw when they met earlier this season. The U’s are without a win in any of the last six meetings, with the Chairboys winning four. Oxford’s last league win at Adams Park came in 2015.
