Sunderland Sign Former Tottenham Hotspur Youngster From Standard Liege

Romain Mundle

Sunderland have completed the permanent signing of midfielder Romaine Mundle from Standard Liege. The 20-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with the fee undisclosed. The deal was confirmed by Sunderland’s official website safc.com.

Mundle rose through the ranks at Tottenham Hotspur and impressed in their youth teams before being called up to train with the first-team squad. Last summer, Mundle rejected a new contract at Spurs to sign a four-year deal with Standard Liege. The Londoner has appeared six times since moving to Belgium; however, he has cut his time short to return to England.

Romaine Mundle has become Sunderland’s second signing of the transfer window following defender Leo Hjelde who joined from Championship rivals Leeds United.

Mundle on Joining Sunderland and What Fans Can Expect

New signing Romaine Mundle has spoken about moving to Wearside and also what fans can expect from him. He said: “It feels surreal and I just can’t wait to get started, play in front of the fans and develop as a player,” Mundle said. It was a no-brainer for me, a club with a lot of history and it felt like the right move for me to progress with my career.

“I’m a quick winger, skilful and willing to work hard. I’m excited [to get going]. The project here, the fanbase, the staff, I couldn’t really say no to be honest. It’s a massive club in England and for me and my development, it’s the right step. It’s an amazing stadium, I can’t wait for it to be packed and to be playing in front of the fans. I’m just ready to get going now.”

Sporting Director on New Signing

Sporting Director Kristian Speakman said: “Talented players like Romaine are highly sought after and we saw this first hand in the summer when he left Tottenham Hotspur. We didn’t anticipate him being available on a permanent basis, but when we sensed an opportunity, we moved quickly and decisively to make it happen – our ways of working and structure are a real strength in these moments. This is an important step in Romaine’s career following a spell overseas and we look forward to helping him settle, as he makes Sunderland his new home. He’s got a bright future ahead of him as part of an exciting squad, and we look forward to working with him.
