What Do West Ham Need To Do To Sign Steven Bergwijn?

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Dutch winger is “one of the top targets” for the Hammers in the January transfer window. However, the journalist adds that David Moyes’ side will only be able to move for Bergwijn if they can create the necessary budget with the sale of unwanted players in the winter window.

That means that West Ham will have to prioritise the sale of some players to create enough financial power to bring the ex-Tottenham Hotspur man back to the Premier League this month. Meanwhile, Dutch outlet Voetbal International claims that Bergwijn is open to the prospect of leaving Ajax. While the club doesn’t necessarily want to offload their captain, they realise his sale can help improve their finances.

Are West Ham Targeting Anyone Else?

The Hammers seem to be looking at selling first before buying, but they are aware of a possible need for a striker, given how the goals have dried up between Michail Antonio and Danny Ings this season. They have been reported to be interested in PSG forward Hugo Ekitike alongside Crystal Palace, but it remains to be seen if Moyes moves for the Frenchman in January.

Bergwijn will provide West Ham with attacking ability and Premier League and Europa League experience. The 26-year-old, hailed as “excellent” before his final season at Spurs, has scored eight goals and provided three assists in 20 appearances for Ajax since joining them last summer. He can play on either of the two wings, as an attacking midfielder, and as a striker if needed. This versatility would be a great weapon for Moyes to utilise.
