How Bayern Munich Have Lined Up Recently

At the weekend against VfB Stuttgart, the Bavarians had to deal with more player absences through injuries and illnesses than they had anticipated. Leon Goretzka and his partner in the holding midfield role, Joshua Kimmich needed to be taken off the squad list on the day of the match. Manuel Neuer started in goal, as Konrad Laimer and Alphonso Davies played in the outside back positions.

Dayot Upamecano played centre-back alongside Kim Min-jae. Youngster Aleksandar Pavlović and Raphael Guerreiro had to jump in at the last moment to play the above-mentioned holding midfield positions. Meanwhile, Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, Thomas Müller, and Harry Kane were the front four.

Coach Thomas Tuchel only made three substitutions throughout the match, all of which came in the final 10 minutes. The Bayern team were an emergency squad that was hardly worthy of the German record champions, or any other top team on the planet for that matter. The performance, on the other hand, was very much there.

Bayern Munich Recent Form and Tactics

The 3-0 win over Stuttgart was the second consecutive victory in all competitions for the team, following that disastrous 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt. The game from the weekend was also quite unusual from a tactical perspective. Bayern had an incredibly small percentage of ball possession with a mere 37%.

The fact that that happened at all, much less in a home game seems almost blasphemous considering that Pep Guardiola and Louis van Gaal were the two former coaches of the Bavarians that have influenced their play the most, long past the end of each of their eras in charge. Maybe it is a small sign that Bayern are finally beginning to take off those tactical shackles. Yet, the 4-2-3-1 formation will likely remain unchanged for now.

Bayern Munich Injuries to Consider

Noussair Mazraoui and Kingsley Coman remain on the injury list. Serge Gnabry, Sven Ulreich, and Bouna Sarr do so as well. As far as Goretzka and Kimmich are concerned, it will likely be a game-time decision.
