Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has issued two reports focused on centre-back Leonardo Bonucci. The tweets centred on where the 36-year-old will end up this summer after it had been made apparent that staying with his current club Juventus is no longer an option.

European Interest in Leonardo Bonucci

First Reports

The first report that Romano posted was that fellow Serie A club Fiorentina were not interested in signing the defender. Discussions never formulated between the two sides, as club director Daniele Pradè said “We never discussed this deal. There’s not even a negotiation”

Romano reiterates that the UEFA Euro 2020 champion is on the market. His availability opened up when Juventus “excluded him from the project” for the upcoming season, one that will be crucial for The Old Lady.

Union Berlin Lifeline

A couple of hours later Romano made a second report, this time with much bigger news about a possible destination for the veteran. Union Berlin, who finished fourth in last year’s Bundesliga campaign, are eyeing Bonucci as a key defensive addition.

Talks are reportedly ongoing between the parties involved. Any offers made for the Italian centre-back would wait until after Union’s deal with Inter Milan for Robin Gosens goes through according to Matteo Moretto.

Bonucci’s Illustrious Career Continues

A Serie A winner with Inter Milan and Juventus, the 36-year-old has won countless domestic trophies. In addition, he was named to the Italian team of the season on multiple occasions. In the continental arena, the main conquest, following many defeats in the final, was the 2020 Euros victory.

An experienced but brutal player should Union gain his services, Bonucci’s toughness is being displayed even during this transfer window. While other ageing stars are moving abroad for large sums of money or to ensure their success in a foreign league, Bonnibauer seems set to join a team making their Champions League debut.
