Real Madrid is in the midst of a critical goalkeeping crisis following a severe ACL injury to Thibaut Courtois’. The Belgian faces an extremely long absence and has left the Spanish giants urgently seeking a capable replacement to stand in for their star keeper. Various targets have been highlighted by the club but Sevilla’s Yassine Bounou is understood to be their top target as things stand.

Potential Replacements for Thibaut Courtois

Bounou has reportedly emerged as the “number one choice” to fill Courtois’ shoes following his emergence as an elite shot-stopper for his club and country. His consistent performances have garnered widespread attention and could now bring him to the Bernabeu. The Moroccan was labelled “the best keeper” in the 2022 World Cup by Italian legend Dino Zoff, following his heroics during Morocco’s surprise run to the semi-finals.

The prospect of David De Gea joining Carlo Ancelotti’s side has also gained traction following his release from Manchester United. Sky Sports has reported that Madrid have made contact with the 32-year-old’s representatives.

With Courtois ruled out for the near future, the Spanish international’s long-standing links to the club could be a key factor in a potential free agent move this summer. De Gea almost joined Real Madrid eight years ago but the paperwork for the move was not processed in time and he was denied a move as the transfer window closed.

Another option on the club’s radar is Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has had a difficult tenure at Chelsea and faced lengthy periods on the bench behind Edouard Mendy. Despite his sporadic form in West London, Kepa’s undeniable shot-stopping abilities could be a huge asset to the Spanish side and a transfer move this summer could help to revitalise his career. However, Los Blancos could face significant competition for his signature, as Bayern Munich is understood to be interested in acquiring his services.

Looming Crisis for Real Madrid

The La Liga giants face a significant goalkeeping crisis and will be desperate to sign a stand-in for Courtois. The 31-year old has played a vital role in Madrid’s hunt for silverware during his time at the club. Most notably, he was named the man of the match for his incredible performance in the 2022 UEFA Champions League final against Liverpool.

The promise of silverware and European glory will certainly be alluring for their top targets.
