De Gea’s Contract Situation

As their current first-choice keeper’s contract expires this summer, United have been in negotiations to extend his 12-year stay at the club. Although the shot-stopper has expressed his intention to return and agreed in principle to the extension, a new deal has yet to be signed.

The uncertainty surrounding his contract has thus prompted the Premier League club to explore alternative options in the goalkeeping department.

Andre Onana: A Potential Solution

The Cameroonian has emerged as a potential solution for the Old Trafford club’s goalkeeping needs. The 27-year-old stopper, who joined Inter Milan on a free transfer last year, has drawn the interest of both the Red Devils and Chelsea.

United’s manager, Erik ten Hag is familiar with the player from their time together at Ajax, where he impressed with his exceptional passing range and composure on the ball. The Dutch manager also praised the goalkeeper, calling him ‘masterful’ for his on-ball abilities.

Potential Transfer Fee and Market Interest

Onana’s contract with Inter Milan runs until 2027, and they may demand a substantial fee, potentially up to £70 million, for his services. While Ten Hag would ideally prefer a goalkeeper suited to playing out from the back, Manchester United must also consider the financial implications of any potential transfer. The club’s priority currently lies in securing a centre-forward and a midfielder. However, if De Gea departs, their priorities could shift, making an approach for Onana more likely.

The presence of Chelsea in the race for his signature adds further intrigue to the potential transfer saga.
