Manchester United will face stiff competition in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong, claims Fabrizio Romano. This comes after it was reported that the Red Devils had a positive first round of talks with his representatives over a possible summer move.

Frimpong Keen on Joining Manchester United

The 22-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defender has been among the best right-backs in the Bundesliga this season and is attracting interest from a lot of clubs as a result. Romano points out that Frimpong’s representatives held talks with Bayern Munich and Barcelona over a possible move.

However, it is also added that the Dutch defender is personally keen on joining the Red Devils in the summer window. With that being said, Romano also states that nothing is advanced over a possible summer move for the time being.

Frimpong was part of Netherlands’ Qatar World Cup squad for his impressive performances in the Bundesliga, as he has scored eight goals and provided nine assists in all competitions for Leverkusen – being among the most prolific defenders in Europe’s top-5 leagues through the course of this season.

Romano adds that despite United’s interest in possibly signing the young defender, they still remain focused on negotiating a new long-term contract for their current first-choice right-back, Diogo Dalot. The links to the Bayer Leverkusen player don’t change Dalot’s situation at this stage.

The club are still in negotiations with the Portuguese defender over a new contract after having reportedly triggered a one-year extension on his deal last year. Dalot has prominently featured under Erik ten Hag since he arrived at Old Trafford, having made 34 appearances across all competitions and totalling four goal contributions (one goal, three assists). But it appears that Ten Hag wants more competition in the right-back position for his squad, which is why Frimpong – who was once hailed as an ‘outstanding talent’ by Neil Lennon during his time at Celtic – is being tracked by the Red Devils.
