Liverpool Current Run of Form

Liverpool has seemingly lost the same swagger that accompanied them to the Champions League final in three of the previous five tournaments. The team has been plagued by inconsistency, as the Reds have won only four of their previous ten matches. On Matchday 26, Liverpool humbled third place Manchester United  7-0 at Anfield. Immediately following this victory, they continued their erratic string of performances by dropping points on Matchday 27.

Though the Reds featured much of their starting lineup against eighteenth place Bournemouth, they failed to find the back of the net as they were shut out 1-0. It is also important to highlight that Liverpool’s squad has been decimated by injuries. Key players Joe Gomez, Thiago Alcantara, Nabby Keita, Stefan Bajcetic, Luis Diaz, Jordan Henderson, and Calvin Ramsay will all miss the second leg with Real Madrid on Wednesday evening.

Real Madrid Current Run of Form

Real Madrid currently sit second in La Liga, trailing their Catalonian rivals by nine points. Los Blancos are in form as they have only suffered one loss in their previous nine matches, winning the Club World Cup in that time. The only loss during this current run of form came from Barcelona in the Copa del Rey Semi-finals at the beginning of March. A match in which, statistically, Madrid controlled and dominated; however, Carlo Ancelotti’s men were unable to capitalize as they failed to score and suffered a 1-0 defeat.

While the trailing team suffer injury after injury, their opposition is nearly at full health as Karim Benzema is expected to return from a one-match absence. The only key injury to note is that of David Alaba who is nursing a thigh injury.

Recent Head to head

The Reds enter the second leg of their this tie trailing 5-2 on aggregate. Klopp and his men will require nothing short of a miracle if they wish to move on to the next round in the Champions League. After capturing an early 2-0 lead in the first leg of this fixture, the home side were defeated comfortably by the visitors, conceding five unanswered goals, with braces from both Benzema and Vinicius Jr.

History has not been kind to Liverpool in this matchup as the Reds were not only eliminated in the 2021 Quarterfinals by Real Madrid, they have not registered a win against the Spanish side in their previous six attempts. Though Klopp has led the his charges to three out of the previous five finals, two of those matches were against Ancelotti’s team and in both fixtures, the Premier League team was unable to achieve victory, walking away empty-handed on both occasions.

Real Madrid vs Liverpool Prediction

With all of the injuries in mind and trailing by three goals on aggregate, the English side must come out firing on all cylinders if they have any hope of upsetting the current champions.

This match is tricky to call because the current holders face Barcelona on Sunday and may want to keep some of their players fresh for El Clasico but it is hard to imagine Ancelotti taking this match lightly. Even if Madrid rotates their squad, they should have enough experience and talent to overcome an injury-ridden opponent, especially when playing on home turf.
