Who is Diogo Monteiro?

Diogo Monteiro is a young Portuguese centre-back, widely regarded as one of the biggest talents the country has to offer. The captain of Portugal’s U17 side, the centre-back is the youngest defender to ever feature in the Swiss Super League and the third youngest player overall. Widely regarded for his ability to play a cutting pass through defences and advance the ball, Monteiro could bring a lot to Leeds United.

Why is a Diogo Monteiro Leeds United Move Happening?

A Diogo Monteiro Leeds United move is potentially coming for a few reasons. The first is the club’s weakness at the back. Having scored more goals than Chelsea this season, the Whites are eleven points behind the Blues at the time of writing. A lot of this comes down to the lack of defensive reliability at Elland Road.

This also clearly fits into the club’s strategy of signing young players with a lot of potential from lesser-scouted leagues. Willy Gnonto joined the club and easily outperformed his £4 million fee. After that, Victor Orta and his scouting team must be paying more attention to the Swiss Super League.

Diogo Monteiro’s Place in the squad

If Monteiro makes the move, he could be some time away from a debut. The youngster is just seventeen years old, and there are four senior centre-backs ahead of him in the pecking order. Aside from those, there is also the matter of Charlie Cresswell and Leo Hjelde on loan in the Championship. Unless the Portuguese defender can impress immediately, it’s unlikely to see him outside of cameos from the bench if Leeds United complete the deal.
