It is already gearing up to be a newsworthy summer at Stamford Bridge. In spite of it only being January, Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports has reported that Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez “is still on Chelsea’s radar” after the London club tried desperately to sign him in the summer transfer window. However, the current stumbling block is trying to convince the Dutch side to part with such a key player in the middle of the season.

Summer Interest

As mentioned by Jacobs, Gary Potter’s side pushed hard for the player on transfer deadline day. Edson Alvarez himself seemingly wanted the move and it was known at the time that the English club would renew their interest come January.

January has arrived and with the team currently sitting eighth in the Premier League, Chelsea need reinforcements.

Area of Need

Despite boasting names like Jorginho, Denis Zakaria, and Mateo Kovacic, the middle of the park is a problem spot for the team this season. With N’Golo Kante injured long-term it leaves the squad without one of its star players. Conor Gallagher isn’t quite first-team ready, same as Carney Chukwuemeka, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been in and out of the lineup.

Getting a player with the quality of the 25-year-old would certainly go a long way to reforming the Blues’ midfield and easing any woes they may have. Alvarez has been a mainstay for Ajax for their back-to-back Eredivisie wins and has been a featured player in this campaign where they currently sit in second place in the table, behind Feyenoord.
