Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea Appreciate ‘New Maicon’ as Reece James Replacement

Denzel Dumfries

Chelsea have included Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries in their transfer list of potential right-backs to sign as a replacement for the injured Reece James, claims Fabrizio Romano. The English full-back will miss the World Cup due to injury and the Blues have been left short of options in the right-back role.

Chelsea Include Dumfries and Kyle Walker-Peters in Transfer Wishlist

The Blues are having a lot of trouble defensively due to the lack of a proper right-back, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek often having to play in that position instead of his natural centre-midfield role. That is why Graham Potter might want to sign a new right-back who can replace the injured James and be an alternative to him.

Romano adds that the London side ‘appreciates’ the quality of Dumfries, who has been performing really well in Serie A with Inter Milan. They wanted to sign him in the summer transfer window, during which they spent over £200 million, but they couldn’t add to that as the Netherlands international opted to stay with the Italian side.

Chelsea are likely to go back for him in January, but Romano reckons that it will not be an easy deal to do. Inter would want over £26 million for the right-back and resist against selling him in the middle of the season. In case they can’t sign the Dutch defender, the Blues also have Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters in their transfer list of right-backs to consider in the winter.

Chelsea Beginning to Struggle Under Graham Potter

Graham Potter has had a very topsy-turvy start to his stint at Stamford Bridge since leaving the Brighton & Hove Albion job to replace Thomas Tuchel after he was sacked. The Blues started their journey under him in impressive fashion, winning six out of their first nine games in the new era.

However, things have started to go very wrong for the London side in the last few weeks. Brighton broke Potter’s unbeaten streak with a 4-1 win and Chelsea have lost two of their last three games since the drubbing. They’ve not been able to score a goal in the last two games and conceded eight goals in their last four games. That’s why the English gaffer would want to strengthen his squad and reinforce the right-back spot with someone like Dumfries, who has two goals and three assists in 19 appearances for Inter and has been dubbed as ‘the New Maicon’ by Italian media, would be a good addition.
