Chelsea Target Set to Stay With Current Club

Anthony Gordon

David Ornstein of The Athletic has reported that Chelsea’s pursuit of Anthony Gordon has finished. This has come as a result of Everton’s high asking price for the attacker, who Chelsea do not believe to be worth more than £40 million.

Anthony Gordon to Stay at Everton

No Move for Gordon

After scoring Everton’s only goal in a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, it looks as if the winger will remain at the club this season. Manager Frank Lampard came out after the game saying he was “very confident” that Gordon would still be his player at the end of the window. Also adding that a sale at this point would make little sense as he is too important a player for the team to lose.

The Gordon Transfer

After Chelsea’s 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge with Spurs, Sky Sports reported on air that the Blues had submitted a bid for Anthony Gordon. This revelation was met with bewilderment from the Sky pundits who at the time felt Chelsea were in greater need of a striker than a winger. Since that moment the links with Gordon never seemed to disappear.

Ex-professional footballer and Sky pundit Alan McInally on Soccer Special gave his analysis of the player, mentioning he heard Gordon wanted to leave Everton but suggested the deal made little sense for many reasons. One being that going to Chelsea he would not be a guaranteed starter with the club having a plethora of wide players. He also that this move would not be assured success as better players than he had gone to the club and struggled.

However, whilst stating all this, McInally never criticised him for his ambition. He was much more reserved about the player’s true ability.

Gordon to Lead Everton

Everton have had a poor start in the league so far, failing to win in any of their opening five games. The one positive, however, is Gordon staying. Two goals in his last two games signify the first time in his Everton career he has scored in consecutive games.

Lampard has put his faith in Gordon to lead this team from the front and with the World Cup coming up soon for Gordon it is about continuing this form.
