Fabrizio Romano: Midfield Target’s Wage Demands Set in Manchester United Talks

Adrien Rabiot

As talks with Manchester United progress, Adrien Rabiot’s wage demands are becoming clearer. Fabrizio Romano is reporting that the midfielder does not want to reduce his salary from his current £6 million per year. With a full agreement in place between the Red Devils and Juventus, talks with the player are the last hurdle.

All About Adrien Rabiot Wage Demands and the Manchester United Move

What Will The Move Cost?

One of the significant issues with the majority of transfers is agreeing on a fee between the two clubs. However, Il Bianconeri were very happy to come to an agreement with the Old Trafford side for a fee of just under £15 million with bonuses potentially topping up the fee. With a single year left on the French midfielder’s contract, this is a fairly reasonable price for United, who are getting a French international with several caps.

The major stumbling block in this agreement is the player’s wage demand. As Rabiot has no wish to earn less than his current agreement at the Turin side earns him, Manchester United can expect to pay £6 million per year for the player at the very least. This would bring the player’s earnings in line with fellow signing Lisandro Martinez and Brazilian midfielder Fred.

Is The Wage Demand a Problem?

Whether the wage demand is a problem depends on your point of view. Whereas the club has the money to pay for Rabiot’s high requests, doing so doesn’t help the culture at the club. Wages at Old Trafford are already high. By signing players with equally high demands, the club keeps that going. Future managers and deals also rely on high wages, leaving the club paying even more for relatively average talent.

However, the midfielder’s demands are understandable. Manchester United do not have Champions League football this season. That is a difficult sell for the world’s elite and means that the club has to pay more as players step their expectations down. Footballers have high competitive ambitions. The Red Devils have to meet these ambitions to get the best players available.

Is Adrien Rabiot What Manchester United Need?

Adrien Rabiot can contribute to Manchester United. The club is in dire need of a deep midfielder, a role that the Frenchman has experience in filling. With three tackles per match and a place in the 83rd percentile for pressing in Europe’s top five leagues, he can clearly play a role as a pivot in the midfield. However, that isn’t necessarily what the club is looking for.

With interest in Jamie Vardy, Frenkie de Jong and Josko Gvardiol, it seems like the club has no idea what role Carrington needs the most. With the window entering its final weeks, the Red Devils need to make their business count if they want to end their long trophy drought.
