Fabrizio Romano Gives Latest on Manchester United’s Pursuit of ‘Superb’ £45 Million Premier League Star

Ivan Toney Manchester United

Fabrizio Romano has given his understanding of Manchester United’s pursuit of Ivan Toney, whose goalscoring abilities have in the past been described as “superb”. The transfer guru revealed via Caughtoffside that United have not yet made a proposal for Brentford’s talisman but didn’t rule out the possibility of a future move, and stated that a price tag of around £45 million has been put on Toney’s head.

Newcastle United have more concrete interest than United in the Englishman, but nothing is advanced yet.

In Need of Attacking Reinforcements

The attack is certainly one of the areas where Manchester United need to strengthen this summer, albethey many.

The Red Devils recently lost Edinson Cavani for free at the end of his contract, leaving them with increasingly limited options up front. With Cristiano Ronaldo now the subject of a transfer saga as he looks to depart Old Trafford following United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, their attacking options could be about to become even more sparse.

The performances of Anthony Martial in preseason so far could have cast doubt over whether a new striker is actually required, with three goals in three games, but he has proven unreliable since his impressive form at the end of the 2019/20 season, and it is unclear whether Erik ten Hag can successfully reignite the Frenchman’s career. Martial is also a player the Red Devils would consider selling this summer as they look to raise funds to help the new boss implement his playing style as quickly as possible with new additions.

Toney would represent fantastic attacking depth for United, should they acquire him, but for £45 million they will want someone who can make an impact on every game they play. While his performances last year were good, it is debatable as to whether the 26-year-old could become one of the best strikers in the league – that’s what a club the size of Manchester United will be looking for.
