Argentine Free Agent to Complete Move to Serie A Side After Leaving France

Flirtations with Barcelona

Di Maria was first linked with a move to Turin after he said his emotional goodbyes at Parc de Princes. Advanced negotiations had already begun. However, the move went cold for a while after Barcelona entered the race for the former Real Madrid man.

Eyebrows were raised when a man once pledged to the white angels of Madrid agreed a move to their eternal rivals. But the Blaugranas pulled out of the deal at the last minute, leaving his future uncertain once again.

The 34-year-old fell down the priority list after the Spanish side started targeting a host of other experienced players over the age of 30. With Robert Lewandowski, Marcos Alonso, and Cesar Azpilicueta touted for a move to Barca, the club opted against signing another veteran in Di Maria. They are against raising the average age of the squad any further and instead are prioritising a move for 25-year-old Leeds winger Raphinha.

Second Free Signing of the Summer

Angel Di María is poised to be the club’s second eye-catching free signing of the summer after Paul Pogba returned to the Old Lady from Manchester.

The 34-year-old forward is expected in Italy this week to complete his medicals and sign on the dotted line. Pogba is also due in Turin on Saturday, July 9 to complete his second coming after leaving the club for a record fee in 2016.

Angel Di Maria: Career So Far

Di Maria arrives in Italy still at the top of his game, despite being at the peak of his career at 34 years of age. The Argentine spent the last seven years at Paris Saint-Germain, making 294 appearances for PSG. He scored 92 goals and provided 118 assists. He also won 14 major trophies, including five league titles.

Di Maria began his career at home in Argentina with Rosario Central before moving to Benfica in 2007. The tricky winger signed for Real Madrid before having a spell to forget with Manchester United. He saved his career with a switch to France in 2015.

At the International level, Di Maria has 25 goals in 122 senior caps for Argentina. He was part of the team that clinched the Copa America trophy last summer and scored in the La Finalissima against Italy.
