Juventus: Matthijs de Ligt Close to New Contract

High Importance

Juventus will be going through major changes this summer.

For starters, Paulo Dybala will be leaving and just played in his final home match. The club is already looking for a replacement.

Captain and leader Giorgio Chiellini is also departing. He’s been the club’s top defender for over the past decade, and of course, has been a constant player since 2005.

Also, there are rumours about a former player returning to the club where he first found glory.

For these reasons, Juventus must look to keep some stability. It starts with de Ligt. He’s been with the team for three years now, but a constant starter throughout his tenure. Of course, as a centre-back, his staying is even more crucial with Chiellini departing. Leonardo Bonucci remains under contract, but de Ligt is both the present and the future.

Now, of course, Juventus struggled this season to an extent. They’re finishing fourth place in Serie A, which is the same as last season. On the surface level, this isn’t awful, as the team will qualify for the Champions League, but it comes after one of the most incredible dynasties seen in Italian football.

Re-tooling is important, but it’s equally important to keep the best talent. De Ligt is only 22-years-old. In contrast, a player like Chiellini is 37-years-old. Chiellini, however, continued to play at an extremely high level for years and did the same again this season. Should de Ligt follow the same path, Juventus can still see more than a decade of strong football from the Dutchman.
