The Table as it Stands Prior to League Two Final Day Promotion Race

What Can Happen: The Title Race

As far as the title is concerned, two teams still have a chance to lift the trophy. Exeter City and Forest Green Rovers, who are both promoted whatever happens will still want to go up as champions. Just one point separates the top two, however, Rovers have the better goal difference should they finish level on points.

Both Exeter and Forest Green have tough final games. City take on Port Vale at home who are currently sixth and require a point to all but guarantee them a play-off place. Three points could see them claim automatic promotion. Rovers travel to Mansfield Town who lie in fifth place but need a point to guarantee a play-off spot. Like Port Vale, should Nigel Clough’s men win, there’s a chance they could clinch the last automatic promotion place.

Latest Odds to Win the Title

Exeter City 1/4

Forest Green Rovers 11/4

Odds are from Sky Bet and are correct as of May 6.

What Can Happen: Automatic Promotion

Three teams can be promoted from League One automatically. Exeter and Forest Green have already claimed the top two places but one place remains. At present Northampton Town hold the advantage and are third on goal difference, however, another three teams will battle them for the last automatic promotion place, Bristol Rovers, Mansfield, and Port Vale.

Northampton travel to fourth-bottom Barrow with a win being enough to secure third place. Bristol Rovers entertain relegated Scunthorpe United, Mansfield take on title-chasing Forest Green, and Port Vale travel to current leaders Exeter. Swindon Town in seventh place have an outside chance but would need to win their game and for those above to lose.

Of the four teams, it’s Rovers who are the form team with four wins and two draws from their last six games. Port Vale are the team in the worst form having lost their last three games.

Latest Odds to Win Automatic Promotion

Northampton 8/13

Bristol Rovers 6/4

Mansfield 18/1

Port Vale 40/1

Swindon 250/1

Odds are from Sky Bet and are correct as of May 6.

What Can Happen: League Two Final Day Play-Off Position Race

Teams currently in fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth could either finish inside or outside the play-off places. Despite Mansfield and Port Vale fighting for potentially an automatic play-off place, should results go against them, they could end up outside of the play-offs.

Swindon travel to mid-table Walsall where a point should be enough for a play-off place. Elsewhere, Sutton United, and Tranmere Rovers who sit eighth and ninth respectfully, both need to win to stand a chance. Sutton travel to 18th placed Harrogate Town and Rovers face 13th placed Leyton Orient away from home.

Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough spoke to their official club website and spoke about what could be an exciting final day in League Two. He told mansfieldtown.net: “You have got to work very hard over 45 games to be in this position to have a chance of getting into the play-offs and gaining promotion.

“Two teams have secured automatics and there is another six or seven that are fighting for promotion after that. Someone is going to miss out and I hope that it is not us but it is incredibly tight. Three teams can still get automatics with the rest fighting for the play-offs.

“It is a very exciting end to the season for everyone. I think with Exeter playing Port Vale, Forest Green needing a win and with us needing a point, it will be an incredibly exciting final day.”
