Union Berlin Forward Taiwo Awoniyi Alerts the Likes of Newcastle and West Ham

Berlin Forward Taiwo Awoniyi

Union Berlin forward Taiwo Awoniyi is a name that Liverpool fans will be aware of and he is now on the radar of other Premier League sides. Awoniyi departed Merseyside in 2021 after six years with the club. He never made a single appearance for the Reds though and was constantly out on loan. According to Jonathan Shrager, Newcastle United and West Ham United are amongst those interested in bringing him back to English football.

His Career So Far

After a successful loan spell with Union Berlin in Bundesliga, Awoniyi moved to the German capital permanently. His various loan moves took the striker to the likes of the Netherlands, Belgium, and of course Germany too. The original Bundesliga top-tier transfer saw him end up with Mainz where he managed just one goal in the 2019-20 campaign.

Following that, Taiwo Awoniyi arrived in Berlin and hasn’t looked back since. He put up five goals in his first year with Union and more importantly, he proved to be an integral part of the general team. To date, he has already made more league appearances for this ambitious team and has 11 goals to his name.

These eleven goals have Awoniyi in seventh in the Bundesliga scoring charts. The select group ahead of him includes Christopher Nkunku, Erling Haaland and, of course, Robert Lewandowski. Along with his club exploits, Taiwo Awoniyi has made ripples in the international sphere representing Nigeria. The Super Eagles may not be going to the 2022 World Cup but alongside Leicester City duo Wilfried Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho for example, Awoniyi helps make up an intriguing squad.

Several Clubs in the Chase

Awoniyi may not have a huge catalogue of football to look back on for potential suitors, but he has certainly impressed with what has been seen. As per the Jonathan Shrager tweet, “Newcastle United and West Ham United are presently showing a strong interest” and for the latter anyway, it isn’t hard to see why. Michail Antonio recently turned 32 and the Jamaican is the only striker on the books at the London Stadium currently.

Alongside the aforementioned duo, “Fulham and Southampton [are] also closely monitoring his situation”. The Londoners are Premier League-bound once again and whilst Aleksandar Mitrovic has been one of the few players able to bridge the gap between the two divisions, it would be fascinating to see how Taiwo Awoniyi would fare under Marco Silva. Southampton on the other hand have names such as Che Adams, Armando Broja and Adam Armstrong at their disposal but with none of them able to match the consistency that Danny Ings showed on the south coast, Awoniyi could be a great option there too.

“Taiwo has impressed with 16 goals and 4 assists so far this season for FC Union Berlin” so it wouldn’t be surprising to see teams outside of England join the hunt. Borussia Dortmund, for example. look set to lose Haaland to a European giant and with Karim Adeyemi of Salzburg seemingly too expensive for their liking, Taiwo Awoniyi could be a great option for Marco Rose.
