Tanguy Ndombele Officially Completes Lyon Return With Key Clause in Deal

Tanguy Ndombele

One of the most active transfer sagas of the January transfer window has come to an end with Tanguy Ndombele having returned to Lyon. The club confirmed the signing on their website. Fabrizio Romano has some added details regarding the move, including that there is a “buy option not mandatory for €65m”. According to Romano, Lyon are to cover part of Ndombele’s salary in the move.

Tanguy Ndombele Returns to Lyon on Loan With Option to Buy

The End of a Saga

For a while, it appeared as though almost everyone was linked with Tottenham wantaway Ndombele.  Ligue 1 side PSG were seemingly in serious talks with the player for a loan move which eventually broke down, La Liga club Valencia also joined the chase briefly, and at one point reportedly had a deal in place for Ndombele, but instead went after Bryan Gil. After all of that, it was Ndombele’s former club Lyon who secured the signing of the midfielder.

Where Tanguy Ndombele Can Fit In

With Lyon losing prized midfield player Bruno Guimaraes to Newcastle in this window a spot has immediately opened up for Ndombele in the middle of the park. The midfielder was impressive in his two seasons with Lyon from 2017 to 2019 and will be hoping to rediscover the form that lead to him being valued at over £60 million.

This is a smart move for Lyon who acquire Ndombele on loan with the option to buy using the funds from the Guimaraes move. If the Frenchman returns to world-beating form then they can acquire the player with no trouble. If he fails to make a difference for the team, however, they can send him back to Tottenham and use their resources to scout and pick up a new midfielder in the summer window where such a move is much easier to complete.
