Phil Jones Set For Bordeaux After 11 Years At Manchester United

Phil Jones: Redemption At Last?

Phil Jones, 29,  has struggled to break into the Manchester United team following repeated injuries. The Englishman could be set for a different challenge in a new country. Bordeaux are one of France’s most historical clubs with a very passionate fanbase, and if Jones were to join the club, he could instantly become a fan favourite should he strengthen their defence. Les Girondins have conceded 53 goals in 22 games this season, the worst record in the division. They recently signed former Lyon centre-back Marcelo, who could possibly partner Jones in the backline.

Bordeaux have faced financial issues throughout the pandemic. Just under a year ago, the club were placed in administration by American owners King Street. They were eventually saved by former Lille owner Gerard Lopez, however, they still struggled to reinforce their team. Recently, they decided to ban 3 players from training with the first team, including former Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny, due to a combination of their poor performances and high wages. Despite the various issues plaguing the French side, Bordeaux have never felt the threat of relegation until this season. The addition of Phil Jones is exactly what they need to boost their survival hopes.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed Bordeaux’s interest on Saturday afternoon: “Bordeaux are seriously interested in signing Phil Jones from Manchester United. Bailly’s not leaving in Jan and so Bordeaux are hopeful to reach an agreement with Man Utd.” The clubs have progressed quickly in their talks, with “Ralf Rangnick’s final decision” all that’s left for the transfer to be completed.

Phil Jones has made one appearance for Manchester United this season in a home loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers. He impressed many United fans throughout the game despite the eventual defeat.

Why Phil Jones To Bordeaux Makes Sense

In recent years, Phil Jones has spent little time on the pitch. His career has been hampered by injuries keeping him out of action for extended periods, while Manchester United’s recent recruitment of defenders has suggested that he is no longer considered important for the Red Devils. At 29 years of age, Jones still has at least five years left before potential retirement. An opportunity abroad would provide him with a clean slate where he is no longer known for his past difficulties but instead observed on current performances.

An opportunity at Bordeaux would allow him to reignite his career in a top European league. Bordeaux’s 17th position is too low for a club that was in the Champions League group stages 10 years ago. Jones could become a crucial part of a rebuild over the next few years.
