Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Six Points From Six

U’s Edge Past Doncaster

On Tuesday night, Oxford edged past League One strugglers Doncaster. Karl Robinson’s side dominated the first half but only went in one goal up through Mark Sykes.

Although the U’s saw two more goals ruled out for offside, the hosts levelled the game despite being on the back foot.

However, substitute James Henry netted a late winner to move Oxford up to fifth in the league ahead of a trip to fellow promotion hopefuls MK Dons on Saturday.

Robinson Shortlisted for Manager of the Month

On Wednesday, the U’s boss was shortlisted for the League One Manager of the Month.

The Oxford head coach guided his side to draws against Ipswich Town and table-topping Rotherham United along with a win over Fleetwood Town.

While his side didn’t pick up maximum points, the fact he managed to get results under difficult circumstances with seven first-team players out through Covid and a further four through injury highlights how important the points were.

Wigan Athletic manager Leam Richardson and Sheffield Wednesday head coach Darren Moore also made the list, but Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley scooped the award after picking up 13 points from five matches.

Oxford United Knocked Out of FA Youth Cup

Oxford’s U18 side have been knocked out of the FA Youth Cup after a penalty shootout defeat against Cambridge United.

The U’s fell behind but second-half strikes from Gatlin O’Donkor and Adam Smith put the visitors ahead.

However, Cambridge netted a late equaliser and won the shootout 4-2 with two Oxford players missing their efforts.

Win Over The Dons

On Saturday, the U’s recorded another important victory as they left the Stadium:MK with all three points.

Hiram Boateng’s early opener came with the Dons on top but the U’s saw another two goals ruled out for offside.

However, Oxford looked much improved after the restart and levelled through Matty Taylor before Mark Sykes netted a deserved winner.

It was a first win from a losing position this season and it was another positive result against a fellow promotion rival.
