Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Defeat to Plymouth Argyle and FA Cup Draw Against Bristol Rovers

Oxford United suffered their first home league defeat of the season after table-topping Plymouth Argyle took all three points on Saturday. Elsewhere, Karl Robinson’s side drew Bristol Rovers at home in the first round of the FA Cup.

Injury Boost for the U’s

Oxford United received an injury boost ahead of their visit of league leaders Plymouth Argyle at the weekend.

All six absentees returned to training on Monday. Gavin Whyte and Marcus McGuane missed the win at Sheffield Wednesday last time out after testing positive with Covid, while Sam Winnall and Billy Bodin have recovered from illness.

Jamie Hanson, who has been out of action since July with a shoulder injury, also featured in training while Herbie Kane, who picked up a hamstring injury at Hillsborough, also returned.

Defeat Against the League Leaders

On Saturday, Oxford returned to league action but suffered defeat at home against league leaders, Plymouth.

The U’s raced into an early lead through Matty Taylor but, not for the first time this season, squandered their early advantage. Jordan Garrick levelled just after ten minutes before Panutche Camará netted just before the break. Camará added a third with just over five minutes remaining to keep the Pilgrims top, while Oxford drop to ninth.

Oxford United Draw Bristol Rovers in FA Cup

Oxford will welcome Bristol Rovers in the first round of the FA Cup after the draw was made on Sunday.

The match is scheduled for the weekend between Friday, 5 November and Monday, 8 November, with the winner receiving £22,629 in prize money.

The U’s did the double over the Gas last season, winning 2-0 both home and away. Karl Robinson’s side are unbeaten in their last three meetings against Rovers but the visitors have won six of the last eight encounters at Grenoble Road.
