Jesse Lingard Rejects New Manchester United Contract

Jesse Lingard

As per Paul Hirst of the the Times, Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard has rejected a new contract at the club. This comes after the failure to see an increase on his game time this season following a successful loan spell at West Ham United last season. The Englishman became an instant hit at the London Stadium last season, but opted to stay put at Old Trafford this summer instead of forcing a permanent move.

Now, three games in, it has become clear that Lingard will not play an important role in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, which has undergone quite the revamp this summer. Such is the depth of options of the Norwegian to choose from, Lingard cannot expect to receive the desired minutes. He knows more than anyone that now is the time to end his long spell at his boyhood club.

A Difficult, but Needed Decision

If reports are true that Jesse Lingard has rejected the chance to extend his contract at Old Trafford, then he’ll be a free agent next summer. 29 by then, however, the line for his signature may shorten significantly, as teams aim to sign those either in their prime or heading towards it.

The fact is, his failure to depart Manchester United this summer, could cost Lingard in the long-run. If he forced a move, the likelihood is that we’d be seeing him star at West Ham once again this season. It wasn’t to be, though, and now, instead, he is forced to watch his boyhood club from the bench week in, week out.

When next summer arrives, Lingard will be desperate to find the right move quickly. He will not want a summer of waiting or the wrong move. The decision he does make may be the most important of his career.
