Atalanta Enter Nahitan Nandez Race

Nahitan Nandez

According to Fabrizio Romano, Atalanta have entered the race for Nahitan Nandez. Tottenham Hotspur were recently hot on the Nandez trail, but are now out of the race to focus on Pape Sarr before the transfer window closes.

Atalanta are reportedly looking to discuss a swap deal with Cagliari. In this deal, Atalanta would receive Nandez while Sam Lammers would head to Cagliari.

The Potential Role

Nandez has starred in Serie A, consistently being one of Cagliari’s top players on the pitch. Cagliari are not a top team by any means, but typically cause trouble for other sides. Nandez also has a collection of great performances for the Uruguayan national team.

Last season, he had two goals and three assists. The season prior he had two goals and four assists. These kind of statistics don’t do Nandez justice, however. First off, he’s very versatile. Nandez plays as a right midfielder, centre midfielder, and even a defensive midfielder. He has lungs of steel, and is fantastic at tracking back to help the defence, but also hounding opposing players. When his tenacity and grit isn’t on display in defence, Nandez not only has the ability to dribble around defenders but also to deliver passes and create opportunities. He’d be an excellent addition for Atalanta as a first name off the bench.

In this deal, Lammers would head to Cagliari. Atalanta are definitely not starving for more attacking talent, so losing a forward like Lammers does little damage to them. In 15 appearances last season, Lammers scored two goals. He’s talented, but not a necessity for a side to have.

Atalanta prides themselves on players who can play a multitude of positions, such as star Robin Gosens, and Nandez will only add to this. If Cagliari accepts, this is an ideal low-cost move to keep Atalanta in the mix of things in Serie A.
