Atletico Madrid Sign Benjamin Lecomte

Lecomte Arrives as Backup for Jan Oblak

Benjamin Lecomte has joined Atletico Madrid to provide cover for Jan Oblak. It is the first time that Lecomte will be playing for a club outside France in his professional career. The La Liga champions signed the Frenchman following the departure of their second choice goalkeeper Ivo Grbic to Lille.

Lecomte arrives with a lot of experience behind his back. He started his journey in the lower tier of French football before making his debut for Lorient’s reserve side in 2010. He made his Ligue 1 debut the same season, but only established himself as a regular during the 2014/15 season. The goalkeeper moved to Montepellier in 2017, spending two seasons with the club.

Lecomte moved to Monaco in 2018 after an impressive spell with Montepellier. The goalkeeper was Monaco’s first choice during the last two seasons, but found himself down the pecking order following the arrival of Alexander Nubel on loan from Bayern Munich. The Frenchman made 50 appearances during his two seasons with the club.

A More Than Capable Backup for Jan Oblak

Benjamin Lecomte has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in Ligue 1 over the last seven seasons. The goalkeeper has kept 85 clean sheets in 349 appearances over the last seven campaigns, with over 80 of them coming in Ligue 1. Standing over 6ft tall, Lecomte stands out for his assurance in goal, his reflexes and good positioning. The goalkeeper also has a large wingspan, helping him in getting a better reach.

He has also played as the first-choice keeper for the last seven seasons and can easily slot in for Oblak if the Slovenian is absent in goal for Atletico Madrid.
