Manchester United Not Considering a Move for Jerome Boateng

Jerome Boateng is Still Available as a Free Agent

United have reportedly opted against signing German international Jerome Boateng on a free transfer. The 32-year-old has been available as a free agent after Bayern Munich opted against signing the centre-back. Meanwhile, Boateng has opted against signing for either Hertha Berlin and PSV, two teams who had an interest in signing the defender. The German will reportedly make his decision in the next couple of days.

Boateng had been struggling at Bayern before the 2020/21 season. The German international had struggled with injuries and lack of form. The last season saw a change in fortune for the World Cup winner. An injury crisis at Bayern forced Hansi Flick to call on Boateng to lead the German giants’ defence. The 32-year-old rediscovered his form and was almost back to his best. Boateng formed an impressive partnership with David Alaba, helping Bayern Munich win their ninth consecutive Bundesliga title.

Despite being in the final season of his contract, Bayern Munich opted against signing the centre-back. The German giants instead signed Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig. Boateng spent ten seasons at the Allianz Arena, making 364 appearances and scoring ten goals. During this period, the defender also won 22 major titles with the Bavarian giants.

Too Many Central Defenders at Manchester United

United were in search of a dominant centre back to pair Harry Maguire at the start of this transfer window. Despite having four first-choice central defenders in Maguire, Lindelof, Jones, and Bailly the Red Devils were keen on adding another one. But the expected arrival of Raphael Varane has changed the equation at Old Trafford.

Boateng is reportedly keen on getting regular first-team football rather than playing as a squad player. The Varane transfer, though makes it a bit difficult for Manchester United to satisfy Boateng’s requirements.
