Steven Berghuis Completes Move to Ajax

Ajax have officially revealed Steve Berghuis as their new player. The Dutch international joins de Godenzonen on a four-season that will run until 2025. According to Fabrizio Romano, Feyenoord will get a guaranteed €4 million transfer fee plus add-ons.

A Controversial Move

Steven Berghuis is the latest player to play for Feyenoord and Ajax. The winger made his professional debut back in 2011 after graduating from the FC Twente youth academy. After a tough start, Berghuis established himself at AZ Alkmaar after joining the club in 2012.

Steven Berghuis joined Premier League side, Watford, in 2015. However, the winger struggled to find first-team action and returned to his homeland to join Feyenoord on loan in 2016. Berghuis made an instant impact and helped Feyenoord end an 18-year wait for the Eredivisie. The winger was one of the first names on the team sheet and was a well-loved figure amongst the fans.

Despite his connection with the fans, Berghuis opted to sign for arch-rivals Ajax. The winger joins an exclusive list of players to play for both Feyenoord and Ajax.

The Allure of Champions League Football

In his first interview as an Ajax player, Steven Berghuis confessed that the allure of Champions League football was one of the reasons that lured him to join Ajax.

He said: “I am 29 years old, and it’s no secret that I wanted to take the next step. It is important to me to further develop myself in the sport.

“When making the choice for my new club, in addition to my development as a football player, I was very much looking for the combination of playing for trophies, playing in the UEFA Champions League and staying in the picture with the national team. At Ajax, I think this all coincides.”
