Houssem Aouar Linked With Arsenal and Tottenham

London Calling

Aouar has been linked to the Premier League in the past with Manchester City following his progress. However it is the turn of the two North-East London clubs to firm up their interest. Arsenal have lodged a bid of less than 20 million euros where as his current club Lyon are thought to want 25 million euros. On the other hand, Spurs are keeping their powder dry in terms of an official bid. Yet they are following developments closely. A game of brinkmanship is likely to be taking place turning into a classic tug-of-war to land the player.

Lyon in Need of Finances

The French club look set to cash in on their prized asset as finances have hit Ligue 1 hard. The pandemic hit French football as the league’s huge television deal with the French Broacaster Canal Plus fell through. The economic reality is such that if an offer comes in on Lyon’s valuation, the player will be sold.

Houssem Aouar an Asset for Arsenal and Tottenham

The 23-year-old midfielder has been a regular for his side since 2016. In his five years at Lyon he has played 127 matches and scoring 23 goals. He scored seven goals in Ligue 1 last season as Lyon finished in 4th position with 76 points. He has Champions League experience too as he featured in Lyon’s run to the Semi-final stage last year. Their fantastic run ended where they were beaten by Bayern Munich. The player has also featured for France’s national side on one occasion, making his debut verses Ukraine last October.

Aouar is a versatile player who is perfectly adept to perform in any of the midfield positions. His strengths are his technical ability and able to pick a pass in key areas of the pitch. That versatility would be crucial to both Arsenal and Tottenham, who have a need for a player in those positions. Especially Arsenal, who are looking to replace Norweigan international Martin Odegaard.
