According to recent reports by BBC Sport and Sky Sports, amongst others, former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo is now the front runner for the Tottenham managerial vacancy. Spurs have been looking for a new permanent manager since sacking Jose Mourinho just one week before the League Cup final. Many names have been linked to the vacant position; however, it now appears that Spurs have a manager in their sights.

Spurs Turn to Santo Following a Succession of Talks With Others

The debate of who will finally be the next Tottenham manager has been ongoing ever since Jose Mourinho departed North London. Many managers have been linked to the role with several having held talks with Fabio Paratici, the new Spurs Director of Football.

Former Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte and former Roma manager Paulo Fonseca held talks but these ultimately broke down. Former AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso was next on the list and seen as an appealing option, but not to fans. Following the hashtag No to Gattuso trending on social media, another option was gone.

Former boss and current Paris Saint-Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino was also targeted along with Sevilla head coach Julen Lopetegui who turned to what was described as a “Dizzying offer”.

Earlier this week former striker Jurgen Klinsmann told BBC Sport that he is interested in the job and said he spoke to Daniel Levy regarding the vacant position.

However, it now appears that the Tottenham managerial vacancy could be filled sooner rather than later. With former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently out of work, a deal between himself and Spurs should be done much quicker than with any of the other candidates looked at.

Nuno Espirito Santo Has Had Success Elsewhere

There is no doubt that Nuno Espirito Santo has had a successful managerial career so for. Whether he can do the same at Spurs, arguably his biggest challenge since becoming a coach, remains to be seen.

Santo took Portuguese side Rio Ave to the Europa League for the first time in their history. A fourth-place finish and three La Liga Manager of the Month awards were not enough to satisfy the Valencia owners and he departed for Porto where a second-place finish saw him head to England.

Santo’s first season in English football saw him guide Wolves back to the Premier League. This following a six-year absence, with his team becoming champions with games to spare. A seventh-placed finish and qualification for the Europa League capped an outstanding return to the Premier League for Wolves.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Nuno Espirito Santo and Wolves would part company by mutual consent. He left the club with them now an established Premier League team. He could now be in with a chance of the Spurs job. A place where fans and the club are desperate for success.
