Matheus Cunha: Making an Impact in Germany

After moving over from Brazil, Cunha spent one season in Switzerland. A big move to Germany with RB Leipzig led to a mixed bag of performances and a disappointing goal return. A January transfer window move to Hertha Berlin is where he started to really find his feet.

Cunha is comfortable on the left, in behind the main striker, or as the number nine. He was also recently called up by the Brazilian national team as recently as 2020. He didn’t make an appearance in the World Cup qualifiers on this occasion, but this shows he is in the thoughts of the management team.

Firmino Comparisons

There are some clear historical and physical comparisons between Cunha and Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino. Both began their footballing journey in the north-eastern region of Brazil and followed this with relative success in German football.

LeedsLive in an earlier article stated: “One of the young striker’s strengths is his energetic approach off the ball, a requirement to play in Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds team.”

Very similar to Firmino, Cunha is a forward that links the play, works for his team and endlessly presses. Often at the detriment of his goalscoring ability, but he is working on this.

Leeds United Linked With Brazilian

With Leeds United’s exciting season coming a close, it’s interesting to see them linked with another forward man. But in the Premier League, depth in all positions is key. With Bielsa’s preference for a small squad, Leeds are only ever a few injuries away from a crisis.

Sky Germany reporter Max Bielefeld said that Leeds have been: “Matheus Cunha could leave in the summer. Leeds is following the player closely for months already. There is also interest from France (Monaco) and Italy (Napoli, Atalanta). Hertha would sell for the right price (30m€).”

They won’t be alone in this hunt, however, with other teams around Europe interested.

A top goalscorer award at the renowned U23 Toulon Tournament back in 2019 shows that Cunha can hit the back of the net. Time will tell if he is able to make the grade in the Premier League.
