UEFA to Increase Line of Credit for the Champions League

New Champions League Budget Could Reach up to 7 Billion Euro

European football’s governing body is currently in discussions to increase the line of credit for the Champions League.

The budget for Europe’s elite club competition would begin at four and a half billion Euro, potentially rising to seven billion Euro.

The discussions are taking place to significantly improve the revenue that the Champions League would bring for the biggest clubs in Europe, including the ‘dirty dozen’ proposing the European Super League.

The clubs involved in the proposal have received a huge backlash from football fans, governing bodies, and personalities across the globe. Major players at the top of the hierarchies of these clubs outlined the financial crisis many European clubs find themselves in as the motivation to create this new competition.

Will Reaching an Agreement Be Enough for Fans?

If UEFA improves the revenue streams for the 12 clubs involved in this proposal and a settlement is reached that doesn’t involve significant punishment for the clubs or these owners, a backlash may continue from football fans.

The entire story of the European Super League would then seem to have been a power play from the continent’s biggest clubs to earn more money for their participation in European competition.

Fans of the clubs would have been used as pawns in the process if this turns out to be the case.

While football fans are united in criticising the proposed breakaway league, this is not down to respect or love of football’s governing bodies. Many fans detest UEFA and FIFA.

The result of the 12 clubs’ owners getting their wish of more money to play against each other with little consequence for the disregard shown to football supporters will likely result in further polarisation between fans and elite clubs.
