Reading Defender Omar Richards Set for Bayern Munich Move

Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Reading defender Omar Richards, according to Christian Falk. The 22-year-old is likely to join the German champions in the summer, along with Dayot Upamecano, whose signing from RB Leipzig was confirmed by Bayern earlier today.

Big Move for the Youngster

News of Bayern’s interest in Richards first appeared during the January transfer window and it’s likely that negotiations have been going on since then.

Reading will have been keen to keep Richards until at least the end of the season given how well they’re going under Veljko Paunovic in his first season at the helm.

Though their form has wobbled slightly of late, with just one win in their last five, the Royals sit fifth in the table and are firmly in the play-off race, holding an eight-point advantage over seventh-placed Cardiff City.

It’s certainly going to be a big step up for Richards, but it appears he has been chosen ahead of at least four other players, showing the belief Bayern have in his ability to make that step.

Falk reports that on their shortlist, Bayern also had Stuttgart’s Borna Sosa, Luca Netz of Hertha Berlin, Werder Bremen’s Marco Friedl and Norwich City defender Max Aarons.

Bayern Getting Summer Business in Early

Having not made any additions in the winter window, Bayern are moving quickly to get their summer business done and dusted.

They have already confirmed the addition of Dayot Upamecano, who joins from their main title rivals in RB Leipzig.

The Frenchman had been chased by many of the top clubs in England, including Liverpool and Chelsea, but they will now have to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements.

With both Lucas Hernandez and Alphonso Davies operating at left-back too, Richards will likely have to wait to get his chance to impress on a first-team stage.

However, the move to Bayern will certainly see him take a step up in his career.
