Chelsea Place Dayot Upamecano at Top of Priority List

Chelsea Upamecano

New Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is in pole position to make a move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, according to BILD. The 22-year-old has emerged as one of Europe’s most talented central defenders and has subsequently become one of the most sought-after individuals in world football.

Dayot Upamecano a Top Priority for New Chelsea Manager Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel Appointment Bolsters Chelsea’s Chances of Landing Upamecano

The appointment of Thomas Tuchel suggests that it was a move already lined up prior to Frank Lampard‘s sacking. It also seems that the German will be backed during what remains of this transfer window, with a move for Upamecano a strong possibility.

Tuchel was an admirer of the 22-year-old during his time at Paris Saint-Germain, and this interest has not cooled off now he is at Chelsea. The new Blues boss is also a fluent French speaker, and could therefore help the young defender settle into his new club and living in London. Chelsea also have French internationals in N’golo Kante, Olivier Giroud and Kurt Zouma, another factor that could help secure his signature.

Chelsea Still Face Stiff Competition for Their Target

It previously looked like Bayern Munich were the favourites to sign the young Frenchman, but another recent report stated that Liverpool and Manchester United would be going head-to-head for Upamecano’s signature in summer.

Liverpool, in particular, have a glaring need to recruit defensive cover, given Virgil Van Dijk’s long road to recovery. The Reds have struggled in his absence and have looked a team who are low in confidence. But, Liverpool are not expected to make a move for the highly-rated centre-back until the end of the season.

It seems that the long list of chasing clubs will all be waiting until the summer when Upamecano’s £38 million release clause comes int play – a comparatively small fee for a player with such talent.
