Colchester United Sign Full-Back Josh Doherty on Loan from Crawley Town

Colchester United have signed defender Josh Doherty on loan for the rest of the season.

The full-back replaces the departed Cohen Bramall who left for Lincoln City earlier today.

Doherty’s arrival is Colchester’s third of the day and their fourth in this transfer window.

Doherty Arrives After Three-and-a-Half Years at Crawley

The Northern Irish full-back joined Crawley Town from Watford in 2017. He has been a regular for Crawley since arriving and now departs for a new challenge with Colchester.

He has made just 15 appearances in League Two season with John Yems alternating his side and preferring other players. Doherty is an established performer at League Two level and will relish the new challenge ahead.

His experience will be vital to a Colchester enduring a rough patch of form. The U’s are winless in nine league games and Steve Ball knows results need to improve if they are push towards the play-off places.

Speaking to the Colchester website about his new signing, Ball said: “ Once again, it’s great to have got another player we identified as a target into the squad before the end of the window.

“Josh is a strong character, a decent defender and will be a real plus for us between now and the end of the season.

“He is the third of three excellent deals we got over the line in this last part of the window, and I’m looking forward to working with them all, along with Rem Oteh who signed earlier in January.”

The full-back could be involved in Colchester’s game with Salford City tomorrow evening. If he hasn’t signed in time, he could face Leyton Orient at the weekend – two key games for Steve Ball and his side.
