Fantasy Premier League: Gameweek 20 Preview

Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 20 kicks off this Tuesday. This gameweek has a full round of fixtures which has become a bit unusual in recent times. Read on to find out more about this gameweek.

Quick Tips

With a condensed season like this, injuries and rotation have become common. Manchester City have lost Kevin De Bruyne to injury recently. Jamie Vardy is out as well for Leicester City.

Many FPL managers owned both of them. As always, the importance of a solid bench cannot be overstated. Those with a playing bench maybe can avoid taking a hit this week.

Goalkeepers

Emiliano Martínez remains the best long-term keeper option this season. The Argentine kept his ninth clean sheet of the season last gameweek.

Nick Pope has scored the same number of points but costs a bit more. Pope has picked up a lot of bonus points though.

Ederson has kept the most clean sheets but due to his price and the fact that he takes up a valuable Manchester City slot, FPL managers tend to ignore him.

Defenders

Manchester City defenders are absolute musts this season. It seems that FPL managers should have at least one if not two of their defenders.

João Cancelo and Rúben Dias are probably the best options although John Stones with his monster 27 points last week has become a very attractive prospect. Pep Guardiola‘s men have kept five clean sheets in the last six matches in the Premier League.

Manchester United defenders are worth considering this week as they take on rock-bottom Sheffield United at home. However, they had a high-voltage FA cup tie against Liverpool to deal with on Sunday. Will Alex Telles get a start in this match? He could be a great one-week punt.

With back to back home games coming up for Chelsea, one could take a risk and pick Ben Chilwell or Reece James. Their form has not been great but Wolverhampton Wanderers and then Burnley could present clean sheet opportunities.

Midfielders

Bruno Fernandes is the standout pick this week. He is the best choice for the armband as well, especially as he only played for around 30 minutes on Sunday. However, that was enough for the Portugues to make an impact as he scored the winning goal. Fernandes is a no-brainer for the captaincy this week.

Marcus Rashford also scored in the FA Cup but there are question marks over his fitness. Paul Pogba is in good form but after starting quite a few matches could be a candidate for a rest this midweek.

Manchester City have three nice-looking fixtures coming up. Raheem Sterling is probably the best option for goals for them. Ilkay Gündogan has done really well recently and should be considered very strongly. Bernardo Silva got a rest in the FA cup and could benefit the most from De Bruyne’s injury. He was brilliant in the 2018/19 season when De Bruyne was out for a long time.

Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez remain at risk of rotation, especially with the return of Ferran Torres. Sterling and Gündogan are probably the best options to replace De Bruyne in terms of FPL. Gündogan seems to be the better choice at the moment as he has been taking penalties and costs just £5.5. However, Sterling’s attacking potential is much bigger.

James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Youri Tielemans are all decent options from Leicester City. Maddison has been in sublime form recently with the other two also doing well. However, the absence of Vardy might affect their overall attacking play. Everton away is a tough game for the Foxes and maybe one should wait before bringing any of the Leicester boys in.

Despite Liverpool’s terrible run of form, Mohamed Salah remains a good FPL asset. He got a rest against Burnley last week so should start this big game against Tottenham Hotspur. Salah scored a couple of goals in the FA cup which should provide him with some confidence. Son Heung-min could do well in this match as well. Spurs will look to hit Liverpool on the counter and the South Korean is a deadly weapon on those fast counters. He scored at Anfield in December as well.

Mason Mount is a really solid pick who has been overlooked this season. He is owned by only 5.3% FPL managers at the moment. Mount may not be the most popular choice but as a sure starter, he is someone you can just hold for long term.

Strikers

Michail Antonio made a successful return to the West Ham starting 11 last week. For those looking for a Vardy-replacement on the cheap, Antonio could provide the solution.

Harry Kane outscored Salah, De Bruyne, Vardy and Bruno Fernandes last week despite playing a match less. As a long term premium pick, Kane is the only worthwhile striker option. The fixture might be tough this week but Kane can do well in any game.

Patrick Bamford has now gone three matches without a goal. He will be trying to break that run and has a great fixture this week at Newcastle United.

Chelsea’s form has been really poor off-late but if there’s one team with a worse form out there then it is Wolves. This is an ideal opportunity for the Blues to pick up three points. Tammy Abraham scored a hattrick in the FA Cup and should get a start this week. He could be worth a gamble as Chelsea have another home game coming up after this.
