Clear Show of Ignorance

Breaking the rules can be classed as a mistake, but, the rules are clear, and the offence Mendy has reportedly done- among other Premier League stars- exposes his ignorance amid the current climate.

In such a position of privilege, Mendy adds to the list of Premier League footballers to break the rules whilst many, in a far worse place, stick to them despite the potential mental health strain.

Tottenham Hotspur players Sergio Reguilion, Manuel Lanzini, Giovani Lo Celso and Eric Lamela were also seen breaking the COVID-19 rules over the Christmas period. This comes just a week after the Premier League announced a record-high number of positive COVID-19 cases within the division.

Both clubs will be disappointed in their players’ show of ignorance when breaking the rules, and they must face the consequences. For Benjamin Mendy, the reported news sums up his time in Manchester in a way.

When he arrived, the Frenchman was billed as one of the best left-backs in Europe. Now, several injuries and a party amid a pandemic later, and the former Monaco man’s time at the Etihad could be nearing its end.

Pep Guardiola will undoubtedly come down hard on the fullback should the reports of the party ring true- potentially resulting in Mendy being dropped altogether. The Frenchman had so much potential when he arrived in Manchester but is quickly becoming nothing more than a troublesome star at the Etihad. Perhaps the consequences could see the left-back make an eventual departure.
