Football Transfer Rumours: Xherdan Shaqiri to Stay at Liverpool in January

Shaqiri January

Despite struggling with injuries, and a consistent place in the Liverpool side, Xherdan Shaqiri is set to stay at the club in January- according to the Liverpool Echo.

The former Stoke City man could have been one of several players to be shown the door but for Liverpool’s current injury crisis. As it stands, though, the Swiss international is set to stay put- helping the Reds attempt back-to-back title wins in the process.

Shaqiri to Stay at Liverpool

Creative Spark

Having struggled for goals in recent draws against West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United, Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to find a creative spark within the Liverpool ranks. And that spark could come from Shaqiri.

Now back from injury, the 29-year-old could provide Liverpool with a welcomed solution- as he has done in the past. If fans cast their minds back to just a couple of years ago, for example, then they’ll realise Shaqiri’s underappreciated importance.

The former Bayern Munich winger played a crucial part in 2018 when the Reds defeated Manchester United 3-1 at Anfield- netting two goals in the last 15 minutes.

Now, three years on, Liverpool fans will be hoping to see the forward have a similar impact on the team at a time when a creative spark is needed the most.

Shaqiri Must Stay Fit in January

With Diogo Jota expected to be absent until the end of January, and Divock Origi misfiring, Xherdan Shaqiri must stay fit to take the super-sub burden at Anfield.

He has had several fitness issues during his time in Merseyside, but that must stop; he must step up as Liverpool seek another title charge.

As the game against Manchester United approaches, too, perhaps the stage is set for a repeat of his goalscoring heroics of 2018 in which he netted a much-needed brace.
