Liverpool Defender Joel Matip Injured for Three Weeks

Matip injured

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Joel Matip will be injured for three weeks. The injury has left Liverpool with no senior central defenders for the duration of the period.

Matip Injured During Reds Draw Against West Bromwich Albion

Joel Matip was brought off the pitch in 60th minute during Liverpool’s draw against West Bromwich Albion. The defender complained about an injury after he stopped an attack from the Baggies. Liverpool had earlier diagnosed Matip’s injury but failed to provide a timeframe on his return.

Following the Reds surprising stalemate with Newcastle yesterday, Jurgen Klopp provided the update on the injured Cameroonian. He said: “The normal stuff with these kind of injuries, [he will be out for] around about three weeks.”

The defender, who has been struggling with injuries all season, will now have to race against time to get himself fit before Liverpool’s all-important clash against Manchester United.

Injury Concerns Growing for the Champions and Injured Matip

There seems to be no respite for the champions with Joel Matip becoming the latest player to have joined the injury list. It’s another piece of bad news for Liverpool who had confirmed Naby Keita’s absence for an unspecified timeframe earlier in the week.

The Reds had already lost Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term injuries. The injury to Matip means that all-three senior centre backs of Liverpool are now unavailable for selection. Fabinho has proved himself to be a great makeshift defender.

But, the lack of another one means that Liverpool will have the relatively inexperience trio of Rhys Williams, Nat Philipps and Sepp van den Berg as their only recognised central defenders in the first-team.

Kostas Tsimikas and Diogo Jota are also not available for the Reds due to injuries.

Thiago Alcantara is Back

With Liverpool struggling with injuries, it was a welcome sight to see Thiago Alcantara back in action yesterday. The Spaniard was playing for the first time in two months after sustaining an injury during the Merseyside derby. The Reds will now be hoping to see the midfielder finally get a run of games.
