After Derby County sacked their previous manager Philip Cocu, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is now collaborating with three other coaches as Derby’s co-interim managers. But his ambition doesn’t stop there.

Rooney Confirms Desire for Derby Manager Job

Fully Committed to Working With His Team

While Rooney has expressed interest in the manager job, his focus will be solely on collaborating with his partners for the time being.

“I’m ambitious, of course I want to go into management,” Rooney said. “I wouldn’t be an ambitious person if I sat here and said I didn’t want the job.

“Right now, there’s an opportunity for the four of us here to try and lead this team, for however long that is. It’s an opportunity for us to show the different ideas we’ve got and get this team back on track.”

Fellow coach Liam Rosenior echoed Rooney’s statements: “We’re working as a foursome. I always think in coaching you can collaborate. We don’t have a ‘head’ at the moment and that’s absolutely fine. We’re working as a team and asking the players to do the same.”

From Legend to Player-Coach

Having dominated European football with Sir Alex Ferguson and United, Rooney decided to rejoin hometown club Everton. He left as the club’s top scorer, with a Champions League and multiple Premier League trophies to his name.

Playing for another year in the Premier League, Rooney then made the switch to the MLS, joining DC United in the nation’s capital. Finally, he found himself with the desire to return to his home nation, so he shockingly moved to Derby County earlier this year in a player-manager role.

The club hasn’t had much success since, with a decent 10th-place finish last season preceding a very poor start to this campaign. The club sits rock-bottom of the Championship, with only one win from their first 11 matches.

Rooney will have quite a job on his hands, along with the rest of his team, as he seeks to improve the club’s fortunes. However, he will get the chance to do that both on the pitch and in the tactics.
