Mohamed Salah Tests Positive for COVID-19

Egypt Football association have confirmed that Mohamed Salah has tested positive for Coronavirus, despite showing no symptoms.

The test was conducted ahead Egypt’s home match against Togo, and will now be without Salah for the remainder of the international break.

The Reds, who already have a rather depleted squad, will also have Mohamed Salah unavailable for their next game against league leaders Leicester City.

The Egyptian winger joins a number of important first-team players that will be side-lined, including centre-back pairing Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez. The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain are also doubts for the fixture with Leicester, but are a long way ahead of the previously mentioned duo.

High Number of International Players Contracting COVID-19 During International Break

The decision to allow the international break to go ahead was highly scrutinised before allowing players to travel all over the world. However, a  high number of players have contracted the virus during this international period and the decision has subsequently been questioned by those in power and by football fans across the world.

Ireland midfielder Alan Browne also tested positive – the day after his national side played against England. Elsewhere, Domagoj Vida played 45 minutes for Croatia before finding out he had the virus and was subbed off accordingly.

What Was Said About Mohamed Salah?

The Egyptian FA announced in a short statement, that Salah was the only player to test positive: “The medical swab conducted on the mission of our first national football team showed that our international player, Mohamed Salah, the star of Liverpool, was infected with with the Corona virus, after his test came back positive.

“He does not suffer any symptoms and the other members of the team were negative.”
