League Two side Mansfield Town have appointed Nigel Clough as their new manager, on a three-year deal.

The Stags sacked Graham Coughlan at the end of October after a dismal start to the season, and the signing of the 54-year old is seen as a great coup at the Field Mill.

Without a Club

Clough was last managing Burton Albion at the end of last season and was the number one target for owner John Radford. He left Burton on the back of financial difficulties during the coronavirus pandemic, attempting to solidify another season in the Championship.

Taking over a side third from bottom, the season is definitely set to test all of Clough’s Football League credentials.

The East Midlands side has only picked up seven points so far this season.

Managerial Career Thus Far

Following in the footsteps of his father Brian; Nigel left for Derby County in 2009 (/2013) after his first stint in the hot seat at Burton. Play-Off heartbreak and a poor run of results saw him be relieved of his duties at Pride Park.

He was then appointed manager of Sheffield United later that year but failure to gain promotion saw him on the wrong side of the managerial nightmare once again.

A second reunion at Burton Albion saw success, guiding the club to their first-ever promotion to the Championship.

Rough Start for Stags

Mansfield are one of two sides in the fourth tier yet pick up a win this season so far despite improvements under caretaker manager Richard Cooper. Under Cooper’s stewardship, the club registered draws against Walsall and Bolton Wanderers.

The Stags invested heavily in their squad this season signing 13 new players including former Newcastle midfielder James Perch on a free transfer.

Clough’s first game in charge will be Scunthorpe United on Tuesday in the Papa John’s trophy and will be a keen observer at Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Sunderland. His first league game will be a trip to third-placed Forest Green Rovers, a week on Saturday.
